WANG Shi

Wang Shi, male, born in 1951 in Guangxi Province, China

Currently Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Vanke Co., Ltd.

1977: Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the Water Supply and Drainage, Lanzhou Railway University (the predecessor of Lanzhou Jiaotong University)
1984: Established the Shenzhen Modern Scientific Education Equipment Distribution Centre (the predecessor of China Vanke Co., Ltd).
1988: Worked as the Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Manager of China Vanke Co., Ltd
1999: Resigned from the position of General Manager of China Vanke Co., Ltd
1988: Worked as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Vanke Co., Ltd
2017: Worked as the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Vanke Co., Ltd since then

Mr. Wang Shi founded Vanke in 1984. Under his leadership, Vanke has grown into the world’s largest residential home developer by sales revenue and China’s pioneer in green home construction.

Mr. Wang Shi is also acting as independent directors for numerous publicly listed and non-listed companies, including SOHU.COM Inc., China Resources Land Ltd., etc.

1.Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy


Committed to Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), Mr. Wang Shi has created and led many influential social commonweal societies and social organizations.

2007-2009: Director of the Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology. SEE is established on 5th June 2004, founded and backed by over a hundred well-known entrepreneurs from high-profile companies in China. It is one of the largest non-governmental environmental protection organizations in China. In November

2009, SEE attended the Copenhagen Climate Conference on invitation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and released “Our Hopes and Outlooks – Copenhagen Manifesto by Chinese Entrepreneurs”.

1999-2002: Inaugural roster Chairperson of China Urban Realty Association. The China Urban Realty Association is established in December 1999, which is an open-forum strategic alliance jointly formed by influential real estate companies in China. Its mission is to build a market-oriented platform to foster industry disciplines and public confidence, guide and codify the workings of China’s real estate market through such higher level collaborations as information exchange, joint training, group procurement, syndication financing and cooperative development.

Dec, 2010-Feb,2014: Executive director of Shenzhen One Foundation Charity Fund. As the first and largest public charitable fundraising organization in China, the One Foundation is initiated by Mr. Jet Li. Registered in Shenzhen, it strives to provide a professional and transparent charitable platform, currently covering activities such as education, poverty alleviation, disaster relief, and reconstruction.

2012-2013: Roster Chairperson of the Yabuli China Entrepreneurs Forum. The Yabuli Forum, first organized in 2001, is the most influential conference forum for entrepreneurs in China. Every year, more than 200 business leaders are involved in discussions on topics like economic development and strategic innovation for enterprises, etc.

2015: Chairman of the 2005 committee, focus on the development of study abroad elite of society, strengthen the platform of the communication between China and abroad, promote the value of elite about culture, education and public welfare. 2015: Chairman of the Shenzhen Non-Governmental Organization Federation, integrated development of Shenzhen non-profit organization and association linkage.

2.Academics


Mr. Wang Shi’s business experience as well as his research results on the private sector of economy in China has a wide impact in the academia home and abroad, relevant Chinese government agencies, and industry circles; meanwhile, he is regarded as an authority on the practice of the Chinese private sector enterprises. Mr. Wang Shi has been invited to present numerous public addresses, by Harvard University, MIT, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Chicago University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China Europe International Business School, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business and other premier tertiary education institutions as well as organizations such as the Shanghai Stock.

Exchange, CSRC, the Party School of CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, China Real Estate Association, and U.S. Green Building Council.

In recent years, Mr. Wang Shi has been lecturing in reputed business schools and holding courses on sustainable development of enterprises, business ethics, etc.

From Jan, 2011, Mr. Wang Shi started to study in reputed western education institutions, specializing in business ethics and cross-cultural research. Mr. Wang Shi was visiting scholars in Harvard University and Cambridge University, during which time he has lectured and spoken in business schools of Harvard and Cambridge on ethics and CSR.

3.Sports and Exploration

As an amateur for the mountaineering, Mr. Wang Shi has successfully scaled the summit of Everest respectively from the South Face in 2003 and the North Face in 2010, keeping the China record to this date for the most senior age to reach the summit. He also successfully completed the feats of scaling the highest peaks of the seven continents and traversing the South Pole and the North Pole respectively in 2004 and 2005, listed as the 11th person who has achieved the so called 7+2 exploration.

Besides, Mr. Wang Shi is widely interested in outdoor exercises and enthusiastic in gliding, paragliding, and rowing – he is the record keeper for paragliding height in China. He acted as the vice chairman for the Chinese Mountaineering Association, vice chairman for the Chinese Rowing Association. In October 2014, Mr. Wang Shi was elected Chairman for the Asian Rowing Federation, taking the responsibility for leading and promoting rowing in Asia.

4.International Cooperation

Deeply committed to international CRS, Mr. Wang Shi has been promoting the idea and practice of green, low carbon life and environmental protection. Since 2009, he has led the delegation of China’s Private Sector to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference three times, getting involved in dialogues and manifesto releases. From December 2013, Vanke, corresponding to the national multilateral diplomacy policy, has established the China pavilion in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, organized the China Day, providing a platform for the Chinese government and enterprises to share their experiences in environmental protection and communicate with international counterparts.

To promote sustainable development, Mr. Wang Shi was invited to work as the UN Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador and Member of Global Agenda Council on Governance for Sustainability, World Economic Forum. In October 2013, he was elected Board Director of World Wildlife Fund US, becoming the first Chinese to win the position. In the same month, he was awarded the Honorary Citizen of Washington State by the governor of Washington State in Shenzhen Vanke Center, in recognition of Mr. Wang Shi’s international contribution to environmental protection.
 

5.Honors and Awards


2007: Mr. Wang Shi won Global Award of LivCom “Individual Achievement and Contribution Award”. The Livcom Awards is globally recognized as an “Oscar for eco-protection” tournament, respected as one of the highest global honors in the area of urban reconstruction and community management.

2009: Mr. Wang Shi was honored with the “China Brand Outstanding Contribution Award” in the “60 Brand Names in CCTV 60th Anniversary” competition, sponsored by China Central Television Network. The co-recipients of the award were the Chairman of the Legend Group Mr. Liu Chuanzhi and TCL Group Chairman Mr. Li Dongsheng

2009: Vanke Chairman Mr. Wang Shi was entitled the “Business Leader of the Decade” of “2009 Annual Business Personality Award Competition” by CCTV. The award is held every 10 years by the CCTV to select most influential 10 business leaders around China amongst 100 award winners.

2010: Mr. Wang Shi is meanwhile chosen by “Fortune (Chinese edition)” as one of “The Most Influential 25 Business Leaders in China”. And Mr. Wang Shi ranked 5th for being the “exemplary Wang Shi with independent characteristics who epitomizes the sort of business ethics that are generally lacking in the real estate industry in China”.

2015: Mr. Wang Shi was entitled “The Most Influential Entrepreneur in China” by “Hurun Rich List”, because of his great sense of social responsibility and international view.
