NSD has continuously aggregated the research resources from home and abroad, and conducted important research on many major issues. It a good social reputation and put forward influential policy suggestions, which were adopted by relevant government agencies. After years of hard work, NSD has become a well-deserved leader among think tanks in universities in China, and was selected as the first batch of national leading think tank construction pilot units in 2015.
NSD has many think tank brand forums such as NSD Policy Talk, China Economic Observer, National Development Forum, etc. It has independently or jointly published a number of important research reports with wide social influence.
Think tank exchange activities such as China-U.S. Track II Economic Dialogue and China-U.S. Track II Dialogue on Healthcare led by NSD have made outstanding contributions to Sino-US non-governmental diplomacy.
Reputation
In 2008, Justin Yifu Lin, Zhang Weiying and Zhou Qiren were selected as "30 Economic Figures of China in 30 Years of Reform and Opening-up" by China System Reform Commission; As the only winner of educational institutions, China Center for Economic Research of Peking University was awarded the honorary title of "30 outstanding collectives in 30 years of China's reform and opening up" by China Reform Magazine; Prof. Justin Yifu Lin was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, becoming the first academic from Asia and a developing country to hold this position.
Many professors of NSD have been elected as members of the policy advisory expert committees of the Party Central Committee, the State Council and relevant ministries and commissions, such as counsellors of the State Council, members of the Monetary Policy Committee of the China's central bank, and members of the Expert Committee for the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan.
The Academy has been honored several times as the Think Tank of the Year by media outlets such as China Newsweek, Phoenix and Sina.com.
Public Engagement
【China Economic Observer】 The forum of "China Economic Observer" was launched in 2005, and has continued to this day. It aims to make use of the research resources of NSD to discuss the hot reform issues and the current macroeconomic situation, so as to strengthen the ties between NSD and all sectors of society.
【NSD Policy Talk】 NSD established NSD Policy Talk in 2013, inviting experts and scholars at home and abroad to share their opinions, in the form of lectures, dialogues, round tables, forums, etc, with an attitude of understanding things, and work together to make a modest contribution to the reform and development of China.
【National Development Forum】 Starting from 2016, it was held by NSD at the end of each year. Focusing on global changes and national development issues, the forum aims to build an ideological exchange platform for major national development issues, development strategies, enterprise management challenges and innovations, with deep collision of ideas and open academic discussions to promote policy reform, public enlightenment and social progress.
The Think Tank Center of the Academy is commissioned or independently provides research reports or policy suggestions to the central government and relevant departments at higher levels, etc. every year, and cooperates with domestic and foreign think tanks or relevant institutions to conduct research on major topics and form reports.

In 2018-2019, NSD cooperated with the Brookings Institution of the United States to set up a joint research team to conduct an in-depth look at the reasons for the success of China's reform and opening-up and the challenges ahead.
