As the first only academic centre in Finland devoted to the study of contemporary East Asia, the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at the University of Turku conducts original social scientific research on the region and its societies and offers multidisciplinary teaching packages at BA and MA levels as well as a possibility to pursue PhD degree in East Asian studies. In its activities CEAS aims to contribute to the local, national, and world community by encouraging greater cross-cultural and international understanding and communication.
CEAS academic staff consists of researchers of all major societies in the region (China, Japan and Korea). Their research topics focus especially on the issues of governance, state-society relations, civil societies, migration, regional issues and contemporary history.
The CEAS Master's and Doctoral Degree Programmes in Asian Studies are open to students from Finland and other parts of the world. In addition, the Centre for East Asian Studies manages the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies, a key institution for Asian studies in Finland, serving more than 800 students annually through virtual education. Its nationally unique research profile and responsibilities put CEAS in a leading position in the field of Asian studies in Finland.
