Introduction

In June 1996, under the strong promotion by Professor Gang Yi (Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China), the National School of Development (formerly known as China Center for Economic Research) started the “Economics double-major” and “Economics minor” programs for non-economics undergraduates at Peking University. As the first double major program offered by PKU, the Economics Double-major Program has been well-received by vast number of students due to its comprehensive course of study, influential faculty as well as standardized teaching and become PKU’s largest undergraduate program. In 2004, the program won both the first prize in the Peking University Teaching Achievement Award and the second prize in Beijing Teaching Achievement Award. Since the fall semester of 2003, the program is also open for students from other universities who are interested in economics. Nowadays, the Economics Double-major Program enjoys a high prestige in society and has over 2000 current students each year.

Program Features

Influential Faculty - The research fields of NSD faculty range from economics, management, demography to political science. Most faculty members from NSD hold graduate degrees from universities oversea. Six former presidents of the Chinese Economists Society are currently faculty at NSD. All faculty teach undergraduate courses which are well received by students. All faculty hold weekly office hours to promote communication between students and faculty. NSD intends to provide education for students in both the economic field and in life.

Diversified disciplinary background - The Economics Double-major Program insists on recruiting students with different majors and advocating disciplinary communication as well as cooperation in order to improve their comprehensive ability and competitiveness in addition to upgrade teaching quality. It is devoted to equip students with scientific research methods in economics studies and to form a systematic understanding towards economics. Students are also expected to consolidate their own major with economics to provide a different perspective in their first major studies. Students of the Economics Double-major Program have diversified disciplinary background. At Peking University, only students with excellent academic performance can have opportunities to join. So far, the program has enrolled students from all majors except economics, finance and management, including School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Health Science Center, School of Psychological and Cognitive Science, School of Journalism and Communication, School of Foreign Languages, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, etc. Since the fall semester of 2003, the program is also open for students from other universities based on their performance in entrance examination and it has recruited students from Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Jiaotong University, University of Science and Technology Beijing Campus, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Foreign Studies University, etc.

Comprehensive Course of Study - The Economics Double-major Program provides students with both compulsory courses and elective courses to choose from. On one hand, the compulsory courses structure the foundation and core of economics study, including Principle of Economics, Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomic and Econometrics; on the other hand, the elective courses involve studies in multiple fields such as economics, management, accounting and health care, to broaden students’ horizons and to increase their comprehensive competitiveness by integrating theory with practice as well as informing global trend and localized circumstances. In addition, the program breaks the traditional boundary between graduate and undergraduate studies so that students who are capable and have interests can choose graduate courses or participate in graduate studies in a specific field.

International Communication Experience - NSD aims to cultivate internationalized talents through utilizing its connections with prestigious international academic institutions. Ninety percent of the Double-major Program courses will be taught bilingually. Courses taught in English will be offered every semester. Teaching faculty will be consisted of internationally influential professors and visiting scholars. NSD will also host lectures series by Nobel Prize Laureates. NSD encourages students to participate in international exchange programs and will provide financial support for students. Students may also participate in international conferences with their mentors. NSD currently has exclusive exchange programs with West Point and MFE program at Baruch College, City University of New York.
