More than half the companies in China's secondary and tertiary industries are in the eastern area, said the first bulletin of a national economic census on the Website of the National Bureau of Statistics today.

By the end of 2004, the country had more than 5.16 million companies in these two sectors, of which 2.91 million were in the eastern area.

More than 308 million people were working in tertiary and secondary industries , the bulletin said.

The government is expected to issue three bulletins on the China Economic Census, the first-ever such census that was launched on December 31, 2004.

The census, designed to draw a panorama of China's fast-expanding secondary and tertiary industries and build a database covering all economic sectors, aims to better policy-makers and experts' understanding of the overall situation of the two sectors.
