Lecture Notice
“National Development Lecture Series” is aimed at setting up a platform for current MBA students to interact with distinguished professors at the National School of Development, like Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, Prof. Qiren Zhou, Prof. Yiping Huang, to name just a few, and helping them develop a better comprehension of the current economic and social developments in China. The series will cover a wide range of topics, pooling the academic specialties of prominent scholars in their respective areas, such as economic restructuring, medical reform, monetary policy, etc. Going alongside with the MBA courses, the series is expected to enhance students’ insights, expand their horizon, inspire their independent thinking, and develop their comprehensive quality.
As one of the lectures in the series, Prof. Eswar Prasad, former head of the China Division of the International Monetary Fund, is going to come to BiMA on March 29 and talk with our students on U.S. dollar’s dominance after the 2008 world financial crisis.

The near collapse of the U.S. financial system in 2008-2009, political paralysis that has blocked effective policymaking, and the emergence of the Chinese Renminbi have heightened speculation about the dollar’s displacement as the main reserve currency.

In Prof. Eswar Prasad’s newly published book The Dollar Trap: How the U.S. Dollar Tightened Its Grip on Global Finance, he argues that the financial crisis, a dysfunctional international monetary system, and U.S. policies have paradoxically strengthened the dollar’s importance. He also offers in his book a panoramic analysis of the fragile state of global finance and makes a compelling case that, despite all its flaws, the dollar will remain the ultimate safe haven currency. Prasad will also offer his views on Renminbi's potential as a reserve currency, putting it in the context of China's growth prospects.
