Institution of South-South Cooperation and Development at Peking University Officially Launched

In September, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced China’s intention to establish the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development at Peking University (ISSCAD). On 29 April, 2016, the National School of Development at Peking University hosted the ISSCAD’s launch ceremony. Former World Bank Chief Economist Justin Lin was named honorary Dean of the ISSCAD. Prof. Lin stated the establishment of the ISSCAD will be a new milestone in China’s cooperation with foreign economies and is important to the National School of Development.

The institute offers short-term research programs and degree programs to middle & upper management and officials from the government, academic institutions, the media and NGOs in the developing world. Using the strength of the NSD’s position as national think-tank, the institute will bring together top foreign and domestic expert professors in political philosophy, national governance, economic development, quantitative analysis and leadership to provide a systematic understanding of development theory, knowledge and skills to help students understand the workings of a developing country and, according to their country’s specific circumstances, research tailored development strategies.

The ISSCAD’s Honorary Dean will be National School of Development co-founder Prof. Justin Lin. As a long-term scholar of China’s economic reforms and development, he stated that in order to realize their aim of prosperity, developing countries must formulate new theories from past successes and failures of similar economies during their modernization. The ISSCAD’s establishment will summarize China and other developing economies’ own development experiences and promote exchange of China’s modernization experience.

Establish in 1898, Peking University is China’s top comprehensive university and world-renowned. It has a deep historical roots and academic resources. According to Prof. Justin Lin, the ISSCAD’s establishment at Peking University has a very significant meaning for both China’s cooperation with external economies and the National School of Development.

ISSCAD Introduction:

The Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD)’s establishment was announced by President Xi Jinping during a UN roundtable on South-South cooperation in New York on 26 September, 2015. Having considered each university’s positioning and strength, Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China chose the National School of Development to host the institute under the auspices of Peking University.
Prof. Justin Lin, Honorary Dean of the National School of Development, has been named Honorary Dean of the ISSCAD. Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the National School of Development, has been named Dean of the ISSCAD. National School of Development professor Fu Jun has been named Academic Dean of the ISSCAD.
