Ethiopia Federal Meles Zenawi Leadership Academy Visits Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development at Peking University

2016-05-31

Ethiopia Federal Meles Zenawi Leadership Academy (FMZLA) visited Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISCD) at Peking University on May 29th, 2016.  The representative delegation of twenty, headed by Dean Mr. Teodros Hagos Tesfay met with the representatives of ISCD at Zhifuxuan, where they exchanged experiences of talent cultivation and leadership building as a part of the main purpose for their trip to China—to communicate Chinese training and education institutions.

Representatives of National School of Development attending the meeting are: deputy dean of NSD Jintao XU, academic dean of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD) Jun FU, assistant dean and education director of NSD Xiaomin ZHANG, administration director of ISSCAD Jianhong YIN.

Ethiopian delegates present at the meeting include deputy dean, education director, academic director, senior management officials, professors and researchers from Federal Meles Zenawi Leadership Academy.

The Ethiopian delegation exchanged opinions on topics of mutual concerns with representatives from National School of Development, who also introduced the department’s basic information, key majors of Peking University, and the profound efforts the university has taken to establish itself as an outstanding and comprehensive educational institution.

Jintao XU: National School of Development wishes to launch academic research with Ethiopia

As deputy dean, Jintao Xu introduced the historical evolution and progress of National School of Development. It is not only a research base for various subjects, but has also educated numerous undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and MBA and EMBA students. Many graduates become teaching faculty in universities both in China and abroad and take on the vital responsibilities of spreading knowledge.

XU expressed his wish to establish research projects between NSD and ISSCAD, together summarizing shared development experiences of developing countries. He also noted that since Ethiopia is on fast-track growth, China and Ethiopia could learn from each other; Ethiopian visiting scholars are welcome to NSD, and NSD could send scholars and students to Ethiopia for investigation and survey. Particularly, in terms of exploitation of renewable energy, China has gathered valuable experiences worth sharing with the Ethiopian party as reference.

Jun FU: the talent cultivating plan of the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development at Peking University

As academic dean of ISSCAD, Prof. Jun FU was deeply involved in discussions with the Ethiopian delegation at the exchange meeting. He presented the concepts behind the school’s curriculum design, emphasized the importance of micro- and macro-economics, and explained the integral role the Chinese government and market force has played in China’s progress. The three aspects of leadership are: reality, vision and foresight. ISSCAD’s building of leadership incorporates both wisdom and vision, and the influence leaders exact on in real world execution.

Xiaomin Zhang: the crux of curriculum design and customization lies in the integration of resources

As assistant dean of NSD with years of experience in high-end customized training and education market, Xiaomin ZHANG introduced the Chinese experience to the Ethiopian faculties. In the past dozen years, National School of Development at Peking University has provided customized training classes for senior officials from government, large comprehensive hospitals, state-owned enterprises, banks and other financial institutions, multinational conglomerates in China, and private enterprises.

Although NSD possesses a most experienced and well-researched faculty, it hardly satisfies the overwhelming need of the market. To develop short-term education programs as customized training, managers must learn to leverage various resources within the university and off-campus, even around the globe. Universities are excellent platforms to be fully utilized and depended upon in order to attract talents of all kinds and a wide range of resources, which is especially crucial to running a successful education program.

Finally, Mr. Teodros Hagos Tesfay, dean of Ethiopia Federal Meles Zenawi Leadership Academy expressed his pleasure for the visit to National School of Development and Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development at Peking University, as well as his great appreciation for the precious experience and concepts the Chinese party has shared. He hoped this trip could serve as the first step for future cooperation between the two parties.

Jun Fu, academic deputy dean of ISSCAD also raised his hope to be able to harvest the ripe fruit of the seed of friendship and cooperation both parties have planted.

The exchange meeting concluded in friendly and amicable atmosphere. The two sides took a group photo to mark the occasion in front of Zhifuxuan.
