Professor Zeng Yi has long been dedicated to research on population policies and management as well as population analysis methodology and its application. Pioneering the study related to population analysis and policies which explored the causes for increased sex ratio at birth in China and their countermeasures, he called for the implementation of the rural social endowment insurance system guaranteed and supported by the State and scientifically underpinned state-level decision-making by analyzing and demonstrating the necessity and feasibility of adjustment and reform on the family planning policy.

He also hosted a healthy aging project “Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS)” which conducted 8 surveys on a population of 113,000 across 20 years. Besides, by developing a family household forecasting model using the ProFamy method, he made progress in the innovation and application of this method, which involves the entire male and female populations and where the occurrence of demographic events changes with time.
