PKU NSD and ISSCAD Hold Inauguration Ceremony of Chengze Garden Campus

In 2021, the new campus "Chengze Garden" of the National School of Development (NSD) and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD) has been completed for use.

On the morning of September 19, the inauguration ceremony was held at the Chengze Garden. Chen Xiwen, Chairman of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), Du Ying, Vice Chairmen of China Center for International Economic Exchanges, Song Xinchao, Deputy Director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, Qiu Shuiping, Chair of the University Council of PKU, Hao Ping, PKU President and PKU Vice President Wang Bo attended the opening ceremony. Also present at the meeting were representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage, Renmin University, New Hua Du Industrial Group, Formosa Plastic Group, Tencent, New Hope Group and other units that offered support and help for the construction work. Senior leaders of PKU and the scholar representatives making great contribution to the establishment and development of NSD were invited to attend the event to witness the historical moment, including Ren Yanshen, Min Weifang, Lin Jianhua, Justine Yifu Lin, Hai Wen and Zhang Weiying. Yao Yang, Dean of NSD and Executive Dean of ISSCAD, presided over the ceremony.

Qiu Shuipi pointed out in his address that the inauguration of Chengze Garden is not only a milestone during the course of development NSD and ISSCAD has been experiencing, but also marks a new starting point for PKU to deepen theoretical innovation, cultivate outstanding talents and serve national development. Over the past 27 years, the experts and scholars from NSD have paid great attention to adapting theories to the Chinese context, taking roots in China, developing China’s theory and contributing Chinese wisdom, making outstanding contributions to the teaching and research of PKU and the development and reform of China. Since the establishment of ISSCAD five years ago, it has produced a number of high-end talents who know China well and are friendly with China, a move also contributing its own share to the development of a community with a shared future for mankind. He hoped that NSD and ISSCAD could take this opportunity to continuously improve their disciplinary systems, create cutting-edge theories, build high-end think tanks, and spread Chinese wisdom, foster more excellent talents, so as to write a more prosperous chapter for making PKU rise into the ranks of world’s top university and break new ground in national development.

Ren Yanshen, former Party Secretary of PKU, Qian Chunying, deputy director-general at the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation, Justin Yifu Lin, Honorary Dean of NSD and Dean of ISSCAD, Liu Shouying, Dean of the School of Economics at Renmin University, Director Chen Mingjie of Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage, Huang Jiaqi, head of Formosa Plastics Corp Beijing Branch, Chen Fashu, Chairman of Xinhuadu Group, and Zhou Yan, alumni representative, all gave speeches to congratulate the completion of Chengze Garden.

Justine Yifu Lin, Yao Yang, and Yu Miaojie respectively presented awards to the respected donation representatives, extending gratitude to these donors for their generous support for NSD development and their contributions to the renovation of the ancient buildings in Chengze Garden and the construction of the teaching building.

After the opening ceremony, a forum for celebrating the completion of Chengze Garden was held. Four exhibitions in Chengze Garden also kicked off. That night, the celebration party attended by NSD teachers, students, alumni, and staff was brought to a successful conclusion.

Chengze Garden was previously an imperial garden in the Qing Dynasty and was incorporated into Peking University in 1953. In 2008, the construction and renovation work of Chengze Garden was approved. In 2015, the foundation stone was laid for a new building of Chengze Garden, and the ancient gardens were renovated simultaneously. With the support of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, Peking University, NSD faculty and alumni, a number of well-known enterprises, foundations, Haidian Administration of Cultural Heritage, and the contractor worked together to ensure the construction and renovation work in Chengze Garden could progress smoothly on schedule. Today, the ceremony marks the overall completion of the new campus for NSD and ISSCAD.
